  Philadelphia Diesel Particulate Monitoring Study
ManTech Environmental Technology, Inc. March 1994

Introduction
During the period of October 19 to November 18, 1993, ManTech Environmental conducted a study to monitor diesel particulate emissions in and around the Center City section of Philadelphia, PA. The purpose of this study was to monitor particulate emissions attributed to diesel buses in a canyon-like area. This paper presents the particulate data obtained by two types of monitors, bus counts, and other pertinent data that were collected during this study.

Conclusions and Recommendations
The saturation monitoring method used in this study is reliable for collecting atmospheric particle mass data (95% data capture).

Weighing precision was well within acceptable limits.

Airmetrics has developed an inlet impactor capable of separating particles equal to or less than 2.5 um. Because of the good agreement between the saturation monitor and dichotomous sampler at 10 um, consideration should be given to repeating this study and utilizing the 2.5 um cut point impactor.
